How to install an Aplication on Linux

Hello everyone, i have LINUX Mint OS on my laptop.... i'm totally new, only experience with linux is with my satellite receiver linux box... that i take the app in .tar.bz, i put it in /tmp folder then i install...
but in the PC version i don't know where to begin .... example
i downloaded this torrentvolve from a softpedia site, how to install now?
it is compresed in ZIP what to do next...

Have a look at the text files Install.txt, Readme and Ubuntu_Install.txt, the install instructions would normally be in one of them

With respect, you might be better off learning about Linux repositories and their use before you charge in installing "external" software from the web! This is not like Windows whereby you find a program on the web that might be interesting and proceed to download & install it anywhere. The whole point of using repository software is that someone has already paid attention to whether or not all the software will work together or not. Linux software is 'basically' library driven and yes, you can install external stuff & be lucky OR you can install external stuff and 'break it to pieces'!! In the latter case you are unsupported in here ( unless you strike a generous soul ) and, as the saying goes, you break it, you get to keep the pieces!!

Learn how to search repositories and forums, try to find an alternative within the existing repo options that will do the task you want. You have thousands of programs already at your disposal. I suggest your Linux experience may be more productive & somewhat less frustrating this way. Walk before you run!

Standard Windows method: Find a website where you can download the .exe file for the specific program you are looking for.

Standard Linux method: Open your software manager and try one of the available programs which cover your needs (torrent clients in your case).

Using the Windows method in Linux (finding .debs and tarballs online) is not recommended at all for newcomers - try to find solutions in the software center.

Thank you everyone... So if i'm understanding right...... it's not that all programs are placed into a folder called program files like in windows right?
and something else is, are aviable all programs of linux for all linux relases??

It's actually much simpler than you're used to - just launch Software Manager and find the program that takes care of what you need done. It's the same you do on your phone (if you have a smartphone), you don't find individual download files on websites all over the net, you open Android Market/Google Play or App Store and find what you need there.

Yeah, but i think lattley i wanna learn how to install manyally, work with terminal, etc... cos i love informatica!!

Well, fwiw I took a look at the torrentvolve page on sourceforge.

The first poster's suggestion to look at the INSTALL.TXT and the UBUNTU_INSTALL.txt was good advice. But...

It looks non-trivial to install, especially as a first time manual install. It is a web based torrent client, involving Apache, PHP and Java. It's not *horribly* difficult, but it's not quick and easy either.

Add to that the fact that it appears to be an abandoned project (last commit is close to 5 years old), I think I'd advise installing a bittorrent client from the repositories and finding another project to be the first "manual install."
