Grub config file - option to change during updates...?

Postby Orographic on Wed Jun 06, 2012 2:13 am

Hi guys,

Just did the latest round of updates today and one option came up during the update installation, that was to change the Grub configuration file or leave it as is. I opted to 'replace' with the new version.

Is that okay?

I have a clonezilla image of this Mint 13 mate install if needed but was just wanting to know what the best approach was with this issue.

Thanks :)

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I really don't know if anything I say is true, but here's my personal interpretation. Some defaults or whatnot for Grub changed and thus it wants to replace the configs. In case you didn't do any customizations, it's perfectly safe to replace. If you did customize, you can keep your own configs, or do a merge with the new ones.
All in all, yes, it is ok that you opted to replace. I think that was the proper choice.

It would be awesome if someone confirmed/refuted what I have said here though...

Well, I have just gone through the updates and dealt with the Grub alternatives as you suggest. Thankfully everything has turned out OK at a subsequent start-up.

I have used updates whether grub or system files (replace with developer version) and most of the time it has worked out
Of course the safest procedure is to not update(change) the file suggested, and you wouldn't really have to, if that file (grub) was close to the current or latest version being suggested as a replacement

In Grub's case, since it is only a version update (still grub 2x), and the parameters of the file (grub.cfg) probably haven't much changed, it is pretty safe bet to let it update.

Thanks, it is a bit confusing for the average user, to have that message pop up, to replace Grub config file or not. There is no explanation for the options etc.

Why does it offer to change the grub configuration file anyway?

Is this like "Replace configuration file '/etc/grub.d/10_linux' " that I saw, when I was installing Mint this morning? I clicked on "Replace", and nothing bad happened.

May this be because the Mint installer found another GRUB install in the MBR of my harddrive (namely that of Xubuntu)?
