Privoxy not allowing connections (Mint Debian, Opera)

Postby dpeirce on Fri Apr 27, 2012 9:02 pm

First, I'm a distro junkie: I use Linux Mint 12 (64-bit) as the host and run various distros in Virtualbox. I had this problem only once before, long ago and in a distro I didn't care about; but now it's showed up in Linux Mint Debian 201204, which I just installed in VB. My usual browser is Opera (12.00 beta, build 1387).

I downloaded Privoxy 3.0.19-1 from Mint Debian's repositories, installed it, and set it up to be autoloaded at startup with defaults. It's always done fine for me without further configuring. Then I rebooted and configured Opera to work through Privoxy (localhost, 8118). However, Opera refuses to connect to any website through Privoxy and will only connect if I disable proxies. I've also tried doing '# privoxy' but Opera still doesn't connect.

/var/log/privoxy/logfile reads "Fatal error: can't bind to localhost:8118: There may be another Privoxy or some other proxy running on port 8118." As far as I can tell, only one Privoxy is running, and there's no other proxy I know of. However, I can do '# killall privoxy', and then '# privoxy', and Opera connects fine after that.

I don't know where to start; apparently Privoxy is running twice? Advice would be appreciated.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I am roughly the same, used Opera + Privoxy for years, windoze then various linux distros.

Been trying out LMDE for some time and when the latest update was released, finally got round to a proper install. (dual boot with PCLOS)

I'm stuck in a time warp and for various reasons install the last Opera 9 version.

Same as you, Privoxy did not work straight away, and it seemed to have problems reading the config files especially the template files.

Ended up changing all the permissions in /etc/privoxy to read/write for everyone, not the best thing to do but after a reboot, at least it is up and running.

Only thing I can think of is to check your admin -> services.

FWIW screen shot of Opera up & running, running processes (no privoxy shows) and services settings.

This is a 32 bit installation
