Set as desktop background function not working properly

Postby Konstellation on Sun May 06, 2012 10:31 pm

When browsing photos, wallpapers, etc. sometimes the "set as desktop background" function doesn't work. I'll have to "open background preferences" and select "Fill, Scale, Zoom, Tile, etc. before the background really changes, despite if you right-click at desktop and select "change desktop background", the newly selected wallpaper is shown as the current background, but not really applied to the desktop.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

The "Set as desktop background" doesn't work for me either. I'm in Mate under Mint 12. If I bring up any picture and select "Set as desktop background", it wanders off into a page offering adjustments to the picture, but there is never a "Do It" button. I finally kill the window and nothing has happened to my background. This is a dead-end dialog. So I can right-click the desktop and select Desktop Background; that works for the few pictures that are offered, but I have hundreds of my own pictures I want to use, and this dialog doesn't offer a Browse button - just an option to go online and select from someone else's pictures. Can anybody explain to me how to select a specific .jpg file from my own library to put on my desktop?

Did you ever click on the "+" button at bottom left of the "background properties" dialog ? :) It opens the browse dialog you are looking for...

I personally don't have problems browsing. I guess your question must have been directed to vodhner.

I have the same problem with Linux Mint 12 LXDE. I used Firefox and it just completely ignores me, even after a logout/login. I've had this problem before on other versions of Linux, and I was similarly unable to find any relevant help. Perhaps I have a simplistic view of things, but I don't understand why the problem occurs. I'm assuming that there's something in Linux which contains the filename of the backdrop, and that setting the backdrop using Firefox (or whatever) changes that to the appropriate file. How can this operation fail? It doesn't appear to be very complicated?
