VLC displays chinese subs as garbled text

Postby Konstellation on Thu May 10, 2012 2:39 am

I'm using VLC with Gnome3 on Mint 12. I couldn't get the chinese characters to display correctly despite I already tried changing the encoding in VLC settings.

From the menu bar, navigate Tools -> Preferences -> Subtitles -> Character encoding (in subsection Subtitles Language). Change the encoding to Universal (UTF-8) and it would probably work. The problem here is that in the character encoding (the list of possible characters) we use in VLC, they do not have Chinese characters, so we need a character encoding that includes Chinese.

Thanks for the reply. Tried that too. Didn't work. Subs shown as squares. Downloaded chinese character support too. Probably a specific font is needed to display chinese sub? I do remember you can select the font to use in VLC, but any idea how to download the fonts manually? Are the fonts compatible between different OSes or do I have to download ones that are specifically designed for Mint?
