Mint Utilities?

Hello everyone,

I was just curious to see if there are any utilities or programs that would help Mint 12 run at its finest. Recently I have been having my OS freeze every now and then and I have to hard shut down my computer which I do not like doing, especially after I spend 30 minutes recording a song on Ardour and forget to save.... you know how the story goes. I am not assuming that any utility would fix this but I don't even know if there is any utility to begin with. Anyway, is there anything out there I could use? If not could I have some simple tips to help keep my computer running at its finest?

Well, I've never had to use any utilities to keep my computer running at its finest. There are tools like BleachBit that you can install from the Software Manager, that remove unnecessary files from your computer. But having unnecessary files on your computer isn't what is causing freezes or shutdown failing. That sounds more like a driver issue, or having not enough memory. If you have at least 2 GiB of system memory, this shouldn't be the problem.

Have you updated your kernel? Open the Update Manager and from the Edit > Preferences menu select to make visible level 4 and level 5 updates. You will have to checkmark them in the main window for installation (won't install automatically). As the drivers are included in the kernel, updating your kernel to a newer version will sometimes resolve issue like these.
