Mint 13 Cinnamon Oracle Virtualbox no internet [solved]

I've just installed Mint 13 cinnamon and then added Virtualbox. When I load my Windows 7 OS in VBox there is no internet connection. I never had this problem with Mint 12.

I need to get this going urgently, otherwise I must go back to Mint 12.

Hi, I'm having the same problem running Windows 8 preview in virtual box on Mint 13. I've checked some basic settings, but I'm afraid I don't know what the problem is. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Try a different network adapter in the virtual box settings. The default Intel Pro / 1000 is always slow and cuts out, I've been using PCnet-Fast III which works great on my system.

I wonder why that would be necessary in Mint 13. I have used Virtualbox with it's default settings to run Windows 7 in Mint 11 and Mint 12 and it worked right away with no seting changes.

Because linux kernel made quantum leaps since Mint 10... BTW check if your virtual network adapter is set to NAT or bridge networking.

I agree that there have been many advances in the kernel but is Mint 12 kernel very different from that used in Mint 13?

The network adapter is set to "NAT".

Meanwhile I'm going back to Mint 12 until I can solve this. I use the Virtualbox Win 7 OS every day, so I have to keep it working.

Now I've had time to take another look at this issue. It's solved! And it was easy...

Just changed VirtualBox's network setting from "NAT" to "Bridged". Win 7 now connects to internet from inside VB inside Mint 13.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I also enabled the USB sub-system. Then I re-booted the computer (shutdown Windows, closed VB and rebooted Mint).

I also had same problem, though it worked ok previously with defaults in Mint 12. I tried all different virtualbox settings to no success. It finally worked for me, set on default NAT settings, only after manual config of network settings on Windows 7 (Vbox). First, note the IP address and DNS address of the Windows machine (Vbox). Insert those IP's into Windows network settings - on IPv4 properties - Uncheck Automatic IP, enter assigned IP (as noted earlier), then also add DNS IP (as noted earlier) manually. Click OK, OK...
the network, including internet access now works!

I guess its a DHCP issue between Mint 13 and Virtualbox.

There seems to be an issue with dhcp service in VBox.
Enter the IP-address manually in VBox.
The Vbox network should be set to NAT.
The ip-address,gateway,dns of the guest(Vbox) should be set manually as below:
ip-address: 10.0.2.15
mask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 10.0.2.2
DNS server: 10.0.2.3

Changing to bridged also worked for me. As I understand it this allows the guest to obtain its own address from the network DHCP server.

just manually entering (in Windows networking) the DNS server as 10.0.2.2 is enough to make it work.

i don't understand how virtual box works. Do you need a CD/DVD of the windows OS or can it be booted with just virtual box alone? Thank you.

just install Virtualbox from the Software Manager, then go menu Accessories > Virtualbox. Click "New" to create a new virtualbox machine, follow prompts and install your OS of choice. If you don't have a disk, try search for Virtualbox images, ready made, then you don't need a disk - https://www.google.com/search?q=virtualbox+images
Be careful with Windows VM as its not an opensource OS, and will still need a legit activation. Microsoft does however offer suitable Virtualbox compatible images, for testing purposes - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=11575
