When I click on a magnet link, I get this http://forums.linuxmint.com/download/fi ... w&id=10476
When I click on "Launch Application", Opera opens. How can I get Transmission to open when I click on a magnet link?
Reading http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=103104, I know that I could either:
a) Copy the magnet link and paste into the BitTorrent application
or
b) Install a Chrome/Chromium plugin.
I prefer neither. I prefer to have my Mint OS to natively send the magnet link to Transmission. Please help.

Re: Make magnet links load up in Transmission
Got exactly the same problem here, I can see what is happening but not how to fix it,
Chrome calls xdg-open when magnet link is clicked, xdg-open supposedly uses .local/share/applications/mimeapps.list, so I added
application/x-bittorrent=transmission-gtk.desktop
x-scheme-handler/magnet=transmission-gtk.desktop
to mimeapps.list, however xdg is not reading this, it instead passes to x-www-browser which happens to be Opera, if you run
#update-alternatives --config x-www-browser
#update-alternatives --config gnome-www-browser
and change to Firefox then clicking the magnet link in Chrome will open Firefox, there seems to be a few issues with setting default apps in Mate DE

Re: Make magnet links load up in Transmission
Yes Firefox is not a problem as Applications can be set within the browser, Chrome is different it calls xdg-open which does not seem to understand the mimeapps.list and hands off to x-www-browserkiller de bug wrote:For Firefox.

Re: Make magnet links load up in Transmission
After 9 hours of searching, I finally found the answer. I believe this only applies to MATE desktop. Just read the last post (by alej) regarding editing the xdg-open file to make it open magnet files.
Now I whenever I click a 'magnet URI' on Google Chrome/Chromium, Deluge would launch (I personally use Deluge, but Transmission will also work using the 'hack' above)

Awesome, thanks, kerykeion for having found that, it now works properly.
Mate is adding new features in spite of fixing everything. Blah, they just don't have the time, I don't mind =]
