[NOT SOLVED] Can't install new software
Hi
I tried to install a new software (dropbox). But the install process stopped by 82%. And after serveral minutes i restarted the computer.
When i now try to install new software it says the process is working at 112% but nothing move. I also can't delete dropbox anymore. (see attached file)
Are there any suggestions or tips? thank you.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't install new software
Hi
Having the same problem. I've ran the above command and it still gets stuck at 99%
Unfortunately I can't install any other apps whilst Dropbox is stuck installing.
Any other ideas?
Cheers

Exact same thing here. Mint 13 MATE on Gateway L21 series netbook.yeejr wrote:I had the same problem, When i ran this command and, in terminal, DropBox begain downloading, but it stopped and hung at 99%.
Re: [NOT SOLVED] Can't install new software
I have the same problem with Dropbox as the above posts, and when I try "sudo dpkg --configure -a", it just stops at 99% and the CPU goes totally crazy (100% load). Only way to stop this is to restart the computer.bwilli wrote:Hi...
The solution was: "sudo dpkg --configure -a".
The problem now is that I can not install applications any more, nor make updates from the updatemanager, because I have to run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" first. So moment 22 here... im stuck! Please help. Thanks.
Re: [NOT SOLVED] Can't install new software

This is the *exact* same thing happening to me -- it's a real nightmare! It gets stuck, no way to stop it except maybe reboot, but then I'm right back where I started: no Dropbox.
On Mint 8, which i was using until a few days ago, it worked beautifully. Just ran in the tray without any intervention from me. Now, on Mint 13, the one go-round when I got *something* Dropbox installed semi-correctly (I think), it kept asking me for my administrator password for /usr something or other (I didn't take note of what it said) in order to use Dropbox. This is NOT how Dropbox is supposed to work.
I depend on Dropbox to keep my critical files I work on everyday backed up, automatically and without a bunch of hassle. Yes, I have an external drive where I could manually back up the files, but there are problems with that and it's time-consuming. Computers are supposed to help us get things done, not bog us down with silliness and rigmarole.
So far, the methods I've tried:
(1) installing from the Software Manager - hangs, as described above
(2) installing from the .deb file - I think this resulted in the admin-password issue
(3) installing via the terminal - also didn't work; hit a Stop
(4) entering the so-called "solved" commands in this thread - did nothing
(5) uninstalling & reinstalling several more times via methods 1-4 above -- unsuccessfully, as it totally gets hung, and now my Update Manager is stuck again because "Another application is using APT."
Is this a Dropbox issue or a Mint 13 issue?
More importantly, how can we solve it?
Re: [NOT SOLVED] Can't install new software
I've got the exact same problem, I've got one machine running mint that I configured a few weeks ago and it and dropbox are working fine - although I am getting the following message every few minutes today:
"Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dis ... ce/Sources 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.150 80]
Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dis ... 4/Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.150 80]
Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dis ... 6/Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.150 80]
Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead."
I wonder whether this is linked to the dropbox issue?
As for a workaround if people need to get dropbox working - this does work, I've done it but you don't get notifications and you have to run the ~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd from the command line when you want dropbox to work.

Re: [NOT SOLVED] Can't install new software
just to muddy the waters...i had mint13 with dropbox working fine before. after i reinstalled the problem started....whether it s a new version of dropbox i dont know....or after an update in linux? anyway....it did work before fine in mint 13 (at the time i had a mac theme installed but im sure that makes no difference...although i am a newbie and know nothing!)

There is a workaround that can help. At least it helped to release the update manager and I can update again. Won't try the rest of the workaround yet, so no Dropbox for the moment.
Re: [NOT SOLVED] Can't install new software
Same here but I think I'll wait and see what develops with regards to a proper fix to Dropbox before I try and install again.
Re: [NOT SOLVED] Can't install new software
Thought I do a search first before I open a new thread .... am I not a good boy.
That worked for me from above link: http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=62952

Added 32bit link.First, to stop the message "dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem." run the following command:
sudo dpkg -r -a
sudo dpkg -P -a
Then, remove dropbox to get back to a clean slate:
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --purge remove nautilus-dropbox
sudo apt-get --purge remove dropbox
sudo apt-get --purge autoremove
Then follow the instructions here:
Workaround procedure:
- Download the Dropbox ubuntu .deb file from: https://www.dropbox.com/install?os=lnx
- Open the .deb with Ubuntu Software Center and begin installation
- When you see the screen saying "To complete installation, you must start Dropbox", press CANCEL
- Install the dropbox daemon (nautilus-dropbox) using this command (from https://www.dropbox.com/install?os=lnx):
for 64bit
cd ~ && wget -O - "https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86_64" | tar xzf -
for32bit:
cd ~ && wget -O - "https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86" | tar xzf -
**NOTE: be sure to use the correct version [32 bit or 64 bit] in your wget url.
- Restart computer
Now you should have Dropbox working, including the notification icon and the Dropbox icon overlays in Nautilus.
It worked for me, hope it can work for you too!
Re: [NOT SOLVED] Can't install new software
Thanks. I followed those instructions, and was sucessful in removing the problem dropbox install and in installing dropbox successfully. For the record, after downloading it, I opened dropbox_1.4.0_i386.deb by clicking in nautilus, which opened the gdebi package installer. So I did not get the message that I needed to start dropbox to finish the install. I just closed the gdebi package installer, and continued with the instructions as listed. I rebooted (without attempting to open dropbox), and after starting dropbox and logging in, everything is great.longtom wrote:Thought I do a search first before I open a new thread .... am I not a good boy.

Still, I hope the problem will be corrected soon.
EDIT: I followed all above steps, and can confirm that it works.
