Restarting X fails occasionally

About half the times I restart X (via ctrl+alt+backspace) I get an error prompt saying that the greeter crashed and it will try a different one. It never fully recovers and I get the same prompt repeatedly until I have to reboot. Any ideas on how to fix this? I haven't changed any X / xorg.conf settings and this is a clean install.

I prefer a reboot over a restart of X, for several reason, these kinds of errors are among them
