The best video converter i can find on linux mint and ubuntu software centers is Arista Transcoder, which is very limited in its capabilities compared to Xilisoft video converter.
Is there any other software out there that i can run on linux mint 13 cinnamin ? Or is it possible to run Xilisoft on linux.

any help would be appreciated

Some people have had success running Xillisoft in Wine (I just done a quick google to find out). If you don't find a suitable Linux program then try installing Wine (a program that allows you to install and run windows programs in linux, it's in software manager) and then installing Xillisoft with Wine. Might work, might not, or might be limited in some way. I've used Wine for a few Windows programs and it's worked very well.

Look into HandBrake and mencoder.

Yeah i was considering trying to run it threw wine, because xilisoft is such a good program for converting video and audio to and from all formats. But I dont like having glitchy running software and i want to support linux software !!

I didnt really like handbrake i did however find WinFF which is fairly good the best so far that i have came accross for my needs.

So the decent programs for video conversion that we have found to choose from so far are

. Arista Transcoder
. HandBrake
. Mencoder
. WinFF

Someone should develope something similar to xilisoft for linux, it would be a great asset.

Another program to check out is Avidemux, which is available in the repositories.

What kind of conversions are you doing? I myself use avconv to convert .avi, .ogm, and .mkv files to .mp4 format for my idevices. I can change the resolution, as well as select which bitrate and codec to use for both video and audio. I can even hardcode subtitles from external .srt files directly onto the video file.

It is true that avconv doesn't have a GUI frontend (it must be used from the command line), but this has its advantages. For example, I use bash scripts to batch convert multiple video files at once. I can convert entire folders of video files overnight without my having to baby-sit it.

3- soundconverter:
Soundconverter is a simple sound converter application for the gnome environment. it reads sound files in any format supported by gstreamer and outputs them in ogg vorbis, flac, or wav format, or mp3 format if you have the gstreamer lame plugin.

5- winff:

Winff is a graphical user interface for ffmpeg or avconv. it will convert almost any video file that ffmpeg or avconv will convert. winff does multiple files in multiple formats at one time. you can, for example, convert mpeg's, flv's, and mov's into avi's (or dvd/vcd format or mpeg or 3gp etc.) all at once.

this package provides a variety of preset conversion settings for common formats and devices. these presets are intended to hit the "sweet spot" for each individual codec. they have been written with a tip of the balance to quality.

for most presets to work, it is necessary to have the unstripped version of the libavcodec package, which can be obtained by installing libavcodec-extra-## as suggested by this package. it might be necessary to enable additional repositories to find that package.
