Choosing the right package of GCC

Postby O8h7w on Tue Jul 10, 2012 6:48 am

This might be just the newbie in me feeling insecure, but nonetheless, it means I need your help. Thanks to you all for the fact that this forum exists.

MATLAB installation tells me I need a "supported compiler" for a few of the toolboxes. I read on their webpage that this means the GNU Compiler Collection, GCC, version 4.4.x. Searching in the package manager yields 5 fitting packages. One of them is just the sources, another one just support for more languages than English - which begs the question of whether I will interact with this directly (and if that package contains Swedish)?

I'm pretty sure what I need is one of the base packages. But there are three of those, and nothing in the descriptions to differentiate them. The names of two of those packages suggests a connection to ARM processors, which would leave me with the last one... I guess. Have a look at the attached picture and please explain this to me.

Ps. What does that sun icon mean, by the way?

I'm sorry, but while the build-essential package might be a solution, it's not the best one and it doesn't answer my question. I don't want to build anything, MATLAB does. And it would like to do this with a somewhat old version of GCC. The command "apt depends build-essential" doesn't tell me which version of GCC build-essential would install. Not counting that I simply want to know... :)
