problem with envy

Postby mesmrr on Wed Apr 02, 2008 2:22 pm

i downloaded and installed envy - it seemed to have trouble finding the right drivers but the install completed.

when i rebooted the system looks different and starts up in a unix termial mode and i'm not familiar working in this environment and don't know what happened.

what can i do to get back to the graphical user interface?

try entering
Code: Select all
startx
if you get an error code saying that x failed to start, try entering
Code: Select all
sudo dphg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and go through the reconfigure process and when that is finished try the startx command again, and then install ou graphics drivers with envy

ATI or nvidia?
You are saying that you've ended up in CLI mode?
Try startx and after you've seen the desktop reboot to see if it works for good.
If not please provide a few more details so I know just where you ended up - there are alternatives....

i then tried the sudo dphg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

ATI or nvidia?

i'm not sure - i was trying to get my tv to display my monitor so i downloaded envy. there were some screens about drivers and maybe nvidia and something about a config file and a reboot needed. i rebooted and it starts out in text only mode and after my signon is just in terminal mode.

There have been a line in startup about my graphics card and chipset being wrong - don't know if this is part of the problem. it's a dell with a celeron chip.

I reported the same problem here but didn't get a reply:
viewtopic.php?f=109&t=10487
I de- and reinstalled
nothing helped. We need a step-by-step guide how to use Envy and install the NVidia drivers properly as it should work (Under opensuse- which is crap- I managed it easily on the same pc).

@mesmrr
type (when you can't start x)
Code: Select all
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

That way it won't try to load the nvidia drivers but instead the basic "nv" drivers.
But it won't solve the problem, it will just enable you starting x again.
How to really install and use the nvidia drivers is still a mystery...

Sorry - missed that there were two seeking help in this topic - I will read through the topic in the KDE forum and see if I find a solution
Generally Envy does not give problems
