KDE mixer doesn't seem to do anything

Postby Zophixan on Tue Apr 08, 2008 5:47 pm

Hey guys, I notice the KDE mixer doesn't seem to do anything, ie. if I adjust volume or mute, nothing actually happens! How can I fix this? Thanks!

We need additional information to help you...

Do you have sound by now ? And after the install ? If not what did you do to fix it ?
How do you try to change volume, etc ? With the GUI or your keyboard multimedia keys ?
Are you on a laptop or a desktop ?

Opps sorry, sound works fine. I'm on a laptop. I've tried both, gui and keys. Tried every slider, doesn't seem to do anything. I can adjust volume on youtube, but not through KDE mixer.

Ok that's better
I'm no expert in this domain but here's what i can propose you so far :

- open a terminal and type 'alsamixer' and look for the name of the active channel (quit the program with 'q')
- right click on the Kmixer icon then 'choose master channel' and make sure the selected channel is the same as in alsamixer

If you still have problems, i guess you'll have to wait for somebody else to help you

Note that the multimedia keys might be a different problem. A useful program to set those is 'keytouch'

Hope this helps

Zophixan,

ed@Mint is correct. It sounds as if you don't have your master volume set to the active channel. You can set the master channel by right clicking on the little speaker icon and selecting "master channel select." Then check the box that applies to you.

Ed,

I am absolutely sure you do better with English than I do with French. :-)

Fred

EDIT: I had two years of French in high school. Do you have any idea how long ago that was? lol

Hey, thanks guys, fixed it :-D turns out i needed to select the right channel! I tried to use the keytouch program to adjust the volume keys to change pcm volume instead of master, but it didn't work, is there any other software which can do that?

Try again with keytouch
It's a bit tricky to make it work, it took me some time too, but i don't know if there's another program to do that.
The other solution is to mess with xmodmap and/or xkb.
I should do that to fix the keys that adjust the monitor brightness but i still haven't completely figured out how to do it :?
So far, i'm using kpowersave's GUI to do that...

Anyway, i'll let you google that...
If you find something useful, let us know, it might be useful to others too
