hi Schoelje,
i have here an interesting error :lol:
it's the first time i see it but thinking about it it can/could be a lot more frequent in mint

Code: Select all

- MU runs once every 15 minutes (default settings);
- if ddm runs at the same time, nvidia-detect is not installed (obviously)
full log here >> http://pastebin.com/pxU2HsvP

as i said this should be one in a million chance but the worrying part is that all would be silent (MU runs silently, ddm would fail silently because most users are not gonna use it in debug mode)

GeneC, try to start with

Code: Select all

ddm -d
I think that would help!

Did you also run the script (or at least not having Plymouth starting at boot)?

So, when starting I will have to check if I can get a lock on /var/lib/dpkg/lock.
That shouldn't be to difficult.

bimsebasse wrote:New version working fine here (detecting fine, at least!). Are you gonna call it Device Driver Manager instead of DDM when it's production ready? The black icon almost disappears in the Mint 14 Cinnamon menu, a subtle light grey border would outline it on dark backgrounds.
Ah, I see what you mean. It'll be "Device Driver Manager", but starting from terminal will be "ddm".
I'm not much of a designer, so if you feel like you can improve the icon (or tell me how I can do it in Gimp)...
I mean in menus, DDM is a bit non-descriptive :D

Tried adding a border to the logo but tbh it looked horrible so nevermind! If anyone uses DDM in gnome shell, the icon will more or less disappear against the dark backdrop of the dash, for instance.

Do not have Plymouth installed, not something I want.... :)

@zerozero:
I've added a function to check whether or not /var/lib/dpkg/lock is locked.
It shows a dialog when it's locked and quits the program or quits installation if you locked the file after starting DDM.

You can re-download the same deb file if you want to try it out:

Schoelje the deb you posted just above is more verbose in the terminal but no warnings in the gui (or shouldn't i expect one?)

My bad! I've accidentally uploaded the new deb to the wrong directory.
I changed the file name so it should work now.

@zerozero
So, if I understand you right, switching from nvidia to nouveau and back to nvidia again went as expected?
How did the wireless and kernel part go?

In the mean time I started to adapt Debian Plymouth Manager:

yep, Schoelje,
regarding nvidia/nouveau all as expected
(in this box i don't have broadcom and this was a 64bit install so i couldn't check those items)

Has anyone been able to test this with ATI, Intel, even VIA cards?
I've been switching away on my machine without a problem, but as you know, I only have nvidia.

Broadcom switching works, but I had a problem once.
It could have been a one time glitch, but I'd like to hear it from you.

If DDM is done (or at least stable enough), I want to include it with the new Debian Plymouth Manager in LMDE KDE UP6.

i have a problem here:
raring 32bit installed in the laptop with intel and broadcom (perfect scenario); i can't run ddm, it always gives Could not get lock on /var/lib/dpkg/lock.
always! no matter what i do, even if right after i use apt and it's unlocked

Code: Select all

The last command that is being executed checks if there is a lock.
What does it return when you run this in the terminal?

lsof /var/lib/dpkg/lock

lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfsd-fuse file system /run/user/zerozero/gvfs

i tried to look at the fuse and gvfs lib installed but at first sight there's no difference to lmde-up6 (where it is working as expected >> but i can be looking in the wrong place)

I couldn't reproduce your issue, but the output was a hint that I had to better catch the output of lsof.
A warning is not something to worry about, however, the function handling lsof only expected to get something returned from lsof when there is a lock and if it gets nothing returned, it assumed there was no lock.
So, I changed the function to check in lsof's output for the locked file. If it finds the path to the locked file, the file is locked:

Code: Select all

$ sudo lsof /var/lib/dpkg/lock
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
synaptic 4867 root   15uW  REG    8,1        0 964194 /var/lib/dpkg/lock
Could you try it again?

Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed

not a clean broadcom handling in raring
when i open ddm i'm offered 2 options
Image
tried the first one (lpphy-installer) and no working broadcom afterwards
1ddm.doc
tried then the second option (bcmwl-kernel-source) and same as above (no working net)
2ddm.doc
note that in both situations after performing the driver selection and ddm give me the indication that the process was finished the option was still not ticked (as you can see in the shoot above)

i managed to make it work installing bcmwl-kernel-source tho synaptic
broadcom install.doc
the odd bit is that ddm *should* have done the same but failed
