it's time to reinstall and try something different (with the system as clean as possible)
the only major diff. i can see here is multiarch being enabled by default;
if the old method (apt) won't work (in a clean system) this means that something else is broken.

Just wait! I think I found out what's causing this.
It seems that the nvidia driver maintainers in all their wisdom changed the debconf of the installers.
This means that, although the questions and messages that are shown when you run from terminal are the same, some became of another type: a simple note became an error and on another the version number was changed.

I tested this on a clean 32 bit system, so I bet this is going to work as well for the 64-bit version:

Building a new 64-iso now, but it's going to cost some time...

Are the Nvidia devs aware that they caused such a big problem? And I wonder if they're considering making things easier for open source devs or if they're taking a page from the Mozilla/Ubuntu manuals and saying, "Tough. Deal with it."

Sorry, BostonPeng...couldn't resist!
I was right, the latest version of DDM now installs correctly on both 32 and 64 bit.
So, if you re-download DDM and try again, you won't have any problems (I hope).

I'm concerned that I have to do this each time new drivers come out and that DDM is not going to work if your repositories are pointing to something different then testing...

I know all too well how it is. I was just trying to score points with the fam in case I ever find I need them.

I lost power to my laptop this am while running my Mint KDE VM and when I powered back up I discovered my VM was borked beyond use so I snagged the Mint KDE 14 iso and am installing that now. Is there anything I could test for you in the VM since I'll have a fresh system on it?

No, my last message was, to say the least, a bit premature:
The installation went very smoothly, but in my enthusiasm, I neglected to reboot and test it.
Well, as it points out, I was left with a depressing black screen and blinking cursor!

yeahh i know the feeling  been there a few times in the last hours.
i reinstalled the system and did some tests

1- installation with apt
nvidia-apt.doc
looks ok but ends up in tty

2- rescued an old ddm (0.2.3)
old-ddm output.doc
tried to "fix" the broken driver install with it (unsuccessfully) but there's one bit in the output that is interesting (the old ddm installs 2 32bits pkgs)

Code: Select all

INFO The following NEW packages will be installed:
INFO libgl1-nvidia-glx-ia32 nvidia-glx-ia32
3- tried your last ddm (same result :( )
ddm.log.doc
at this point i'm going to try something different:
- install a 2012.04 lmde iso, update it to UP6, convert it to multiarch and try ddm on it
(will take time  )

nvidia license taints kernel:
http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDr ... _kernel.22

This only seems to be a warning, but why isn't nvidia loading?

I'm going to test on a clean 32-bit install (no multiarch), manual install (see if debconf is showing some screens or other information DDM misses).

[EDIT]
This is bad: also on a clean 32-bit install, the install goes fine but ends in tty after reboot.

I realize that this may seem annoying for me chime in...

I have never had a time when installing nvidia drivers that the installation ever worked without uninstalling the free drivers manually.

Am I even grasping at the cusp of what you all are communicating?

i know about the recommendation to blacklist nouveau, the thing is that i never followed it  and nvidia always installed just fine by apt (and lately by ddm) can't put my finger on the problem here

(the 2012.04 iso installation/upgrade is almost done, results soon)

It's in the middle of the night here, but I couldn't go to sleep until I'd find out what's the cause of this.
I tried installing the nvidia experimental packages: same result.
I installed LMDE KDE UP5, apt-get update, and installed the nvidia packages: no problem at all!

Conclusion:
kernel version 3.2.0-4 and the nvidia drivers don't like each other much.
I'll have to start all over with the iso's: hold back the kernel (3.2.0-3) and upgrade the rest.

[EDIT]
I was just thinking: maybe the experimental kernel (3.2.10) would do the trick...
More testing to do, but not tomorrow.
