Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed

First a reply to your previous post. My system is not 32 bit, it is 64bit. Here is an extract from 'System Information':

Code: Select all
-Version-
Kernel      : Linux 3.2.0-32-generic (x86_64)

Secondly my original question was not to do with pae ( I don't need pae because I have a 64 bit system with only 2 gb ram) it was to do with the fact that it identified my processor as single core when it isn't. Another extract from 'System Information':

Code: Select all
-Computer-
Processor      : 2x Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     T7300  @ 2.00GHz

Anyway, I downloaded the latest update and here is the log file, hope it helps. I am not trying to be difficult, honest, just telling it like it is.

Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed

Okay, I assumed that "3.2.0-32-generic" was a 32-bit kernel because there was no "amd64" in the name.
Now that we know that in fact it's a 64-bit kernel, we can safely ignore the warning.

Thanks for your feedback.

Can anybody help me with the following with the following test:

If DDM lists both Nvidia and PAE, deselect PAE and install Nvidia instead.
Reboot and start DDM.
Now, with the Nvidia drivers already installed, install PAE.
Reboot with the PAE kernel.

The last step for me never worked. Somehow the PAE entry was never listed in GRUB.
Probably because I'm running it from a USB external drive and about 15 OS's to choose from...

I'm curious what will happen: does it reboot into KDE without a problem and are the Nvidia drivers working (I doubt it), or are the Nouveau drivers used (and you need to run DDM again to install the Nvidia drivers), or are you left in the void and do you need to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf your self (which I should then handle in DDM when installing PAE)?

@zerozero
I'm still in doubt about what to do in this scenario: should I move/delete xorg.conf, or edit the file, or reinstall the drivers (I think that's no use because, as far as I know, you need to be booted in the new kernel to do so), or do nothing at all (which is not very nice to leave your users without a graphical environment). Your findings will hopefully make the decision easier.

Other news:
Today I had a chat with Clem: DDM will very probably be included in LMDE this December and later in Linux Mint 15. So, we're not doing this for nothing.
December will also be the month where a decision is made in regard to the official state of LMDE KDE.
It all depends on the user base of LMDE. If that is large enough it might be worth the effort to include LMDE KDE.

I don't know about you, but I'm ready for my Christmas present! :D

Schoelje,
i had to re-download the iso (the one i had somehow gave me a wrong md5sum this time: the external HDD where it was is failing badly and i managed to copy it to another one but apparently not without errors) well anyway, long story short lmdekde32_up5sr2_ 201210.iso is almost d/led.

Schoelje,
i can't perform these steps:
1- as i said i re-download the lmdekde32_up5sr2_ 201210.iso now, md5sum checks, created a USB live stick with unetbootin, booted the live system fine;
2- info from the live system

3- installed in sda8 (with its grub also in sda8), grub in MBR is controlled by the system installed in sda2
4- rebooted into sda2 to do a sudo update-grub
5- back again in grub and looking for sda8 i see both pae and 486 installed

And if you boot into the 486 kernel, remove the PAE kernel (headers and image) and then follow the steps I mentioned above?

i'm left on tty, no X :D
booted into 486 (having removed the PAE) and installing nvidia
install NVIDIA ddm.doc
(32.5 KiB) Downloaded 22 times

with nvidia let's install PAE
install KERNEL ddm.doc
(32.15 KiB) Downloaded 26 times

i believe that the issue is here

DKMS is only building the drivers for running kernel Building only for 3.2.0-3-486

the fix is (on the tty of PAE) reinstall nvidia-kernel-dkms
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install --reinstall nvidia-kernel-dkms

Code: Select all
startx

you should be again in kde

now what i need to find out is if installing the drivers with DKMS gives the same results
Code: Select all
apt install nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx build-essential nvidia-settings nvidia-xconfig

Just what I was afraid of!

But I cannot leave the user without X and let them install dkms themselves.
What if, after installing the PAE kernel I would do this:
Code: Select all
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak

or change the code in that file from
Code: Select all
Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Device0"
    Driver         "nvidia"
    VendorName     "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSection

to
Code: Select all
Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Device0"
    Driver         "nouveau"
    VendorName     "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSection

Any suggestions?

i will have to test those scenarios tomorrow (theoretically they should load nouveau and give us at least X to work with)
i want also to see if after the steps lists above we run the install --reinstall nvidia-kernel-dkms (before reboot) what's the result :?:

I bet it will only install dkms for the running kernel: the 486.
But it's a good test to verify that.

Schoelje,
doing the test now (all the steps done before reboot) i'm afraid i will boot to void - dkms doesn't build the drivers to pae as you can see here http://pastebin.com/zmK1T2Mq

just before reboot i did
Code: Select all
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
as you suggested above; instead of the void i booted into kde and rerunning ddm again i can see that this time dkms is building the drivers against the right kernel
Code: Select all
INFO      First Installation: checking all kernels...
INFO      Building only for 3.2.0-3-686-pae
INFO      Building initial module for 3.2.0-3-686-pae

INFO      depmod.....
INFO      DKMS: install completed.

now you just have to automate  the process

I'm glad you could verify my suspicion.
Moving xorg.conf seems to be the safest way.
I'll update the code and post it here.

Thanks again, zerozero!

[EDIT]
I just uploaded the new version, so it should now be fixed:

New volunteer (or volunteered :)):

Tracking Sid, installed, boots to distorted log-in screen (mainly black, bar of distorted colour at top 2-3cm) with huge square mouse cursor, that can be moved.

Log: http://pastebin.com/MRiCs1L4

What is the easiest way to recover from this? e.g. quicker than a clonezilla restore?4
*Edit* get rid of xorg.conf - puts you back in fallback mode, will stay like this and await instructions!

Machine specs in my sig.

Cheers

Steve

*Edit2* - My card is working in Manjaro :
