Postby jokersloose on Fri Apr 11, 2008 8:34 pm

Hey all,

I downloaded a few music video's off Frostwire and I can't get any play back. I have audio but no video. Is there a plug in I need? Or something. If someone could please point me too a how to on Movie Player.

Thanks,
James

Check that you have the appropriate proprietary codecs installed, and VLC is a great universal everything player. Both can be found in the repos through Synaptic.

How do I do that?

VLC is a great universal everything player

I did install VLC and when I try too play any of the video's I downloaded it flashes a picture for a split second and then goes black again.

Thanks for the reply,
James

Check synaptic, see if w32codecs, maybe gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg, libdvdcss2 are installed. There may be others, but I think those should cover mostly any format. Also in VLC in synaptic make sure all the plugins under it are installed.
Cheers.

From what I can tell all the plug-ins are installed. I looked at the ones you posted and yep they are installed. I even tried a DVD and get the same thing. Audio no video. This DVD plays on my desktop with Mint, but for some reason it won't play on the laptop.

Thanks,
James

Hmm I'm stumped. Are you running the laptop through an external monitor? You had the Toshiba lappy right? I'll try and do some searching later tonight/tomorrow as to what your problem is if you can't get a fix - but I got two final exams today - I'll be writing those for most of the day. :(
Cheers.

Yep it's a Toshiba A105 laptop. Funny thing is everything works with my desktop and I can't see any thing diferent in the set up between the two machines. Thanks for the help :)

Best of luck on your test.

I ran sudo gstreamer-properties and got a couple of errors in terminal. Not sure it matters but thought I would post them just in case it does.

(gstreamer-properties:16267): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Could not open network socket.
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'artsdsink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'pulsesink'

gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'qcamsrc'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'esdmon'

Now I did look for the plugin's in SPM but didn't come up with anything.

For movieplayer to work you need to set output to x11
You find it in preferences (right click the movie window)

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it
