Trouble updating? archive.removed.net is down - up again

Update February 3rd: As per today's announcement, the removed and removed repositories are operational again. This does not mean however that removed and removed will continue as before. The maintainer shares his intention to do an online survey, and reduce the number of packages that will be available for Ubuntu 13.04 in the removed and removed repositories to a manageable number. The most popular packages he is planning to integrate into the Ubuntu repositories directly, forgoing the need to add the removed and removed repositories to your system. It is unclear to me what has brought about this change, as just over two weeks ago the clearly worded "I decided to discontinue removed and removed" announcement left little doubt. But, good news for those that enjoy using removed and removed!

Update Jnauary 19th: it was shared yesterday that both of these software portals have been discontinued permanently. Read more on the global announcement: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 3&t=123258.

It appears the websites removed/ and removed/ are down. If you try using the Update Manager or use commands like "sudo apt-get update" or "apt update" you are most likely getting errors like:

Code: Select all

W: Failed to fetch http://archive.removed/ubuntu/dists/precise-removed/Release.gpg Unable to connect to archive.removed:http:
This is caused by the above websites being down.

You can either disable the removed and removed repositories till these websites are up again or you can switch to a mirror. The latter is detailed in SurfaceUnits' post here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 66#p656112 (thanks zerozero for the link).

If anybody has news as to what is up with these websites, kindly share here.

darl653, that is a different problem (look at the error, there is no "removed" in there anywhere). The Linux Mint repository is having problems since yesterday, and that is what this error is. The team is working on fixing that.

And that also is a different error. If your error is not EXACTLY what is described in the start post then please don't post here but open your own topic.

"The server is currently down because of a power outage with hardware failure. Please be patient."
I dont understand, why it take so long time to fix it?
Do I need archive.removed at all?

You don't need it. It is not enabled by default in Mint so it's fine to disable both removed options in Software Sources on the Others tab.

Yes. In my case archive.removed is for applets from Screenlets, Slideshow, games like chess and others.They are not so important, and there is no errors.

removed.net repositories are down

They have been for a while (a couple of weeks anyway). In case anybody is googling why their package manager isn't working, this may be the problem. See http://blog.removed/

Thanks, Vincent. I did try to find the topic, google, and what-not before I started a new thread. I promise! I guess I figured it would be under "announcements" or something. Not much is turning up in the google world about broken ubuntu repos, btw. One of those situations where "if you know enough to be able to google it, you don't need to google it" I suppose.

From removed.net post on G+:

removed and removed discontinue

After the server crash where also the removed and removed database was lost and given the fact that removed and removed now have too many packages to be handled as a one-man-project I decided to discontinue removed and removed.
In the last years I have spent so many hours in the project that now it is just too much for me to maintain beside my usual job.

But this does not mean that all the work in removed and removed is lost. The repository is still completely mirrored, e.g.: http://mirror.informatik.uni-mannheim.d ... untu/pool/ (Google search: 'quantal-removed-testing intitle:"Index of"' should give you a good list).
Also all the package script (i.e. the debian directory) for every package in the precise and quantal repository are available in my GitHub repositories:
* https://github.com/ckorn/removed
* https://github.com/ckorn/removed
* For special upstream watchers there is this repository: https://github.com/ckorn/Upstream-watchers

The web interface of both removed and removed is called apt-portal which is specialised for viewing the information in an apt repository:
* https://code.launchpad.net/apt-portal

And finally there are the scripts and little helpers of the automated build process:
* https://code.launchpad.net/debfactory

The entire repository of Debian packages can be downloaded with this script:
* http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=JaVkvFFZ

It is currently 84GiB in size so please only download it if you really want all the packages. If you just want some simply use a mirror.

Let me also thank everybody of you for the trust you had in removed and removed as an unofficial repository. I think removed and removed were one of the greatest unofficial repositories for Ubuntu packages.
I think to spend some time to bring some of the packages in the official repository.

Thank you and bye!

Thats all Folks. removed & removed are dead for now.
