Firefox file/emai link locks system

I have firefox 16.0.2/17.0.1 on Mint13 and recently updated to the latest and greatest Mint13 has to offer.
Sad,
Problem 1 firefox window became garbage, Nvidia problem no doubt. Fix grab and move one of the window borders else the + top right. Same new problem with Thunderbird.
Problem 2 File/Email link crashes system. Fix "Ctl Alt F2", login and "sudo shutdown -r now". Not good, should not update the SW. Ian.
