Does the files exist?
This may be hard to check but one thing that came to mind is that the files are gone and it's only a false entry in the file system
You could run fsck or wait for it to do it's scheduled run

fsck didn't help either. I'll probably just wait for the Mint refresh and start over then. It is still usable for now. I don;t need to install anything right now. The only reason I tried to open synaptic was to see if a certain package was available or not. I checked on another machine and it is. Question answered.

Two commands to test (and I may have given the first before - did not read everything again)
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg --configure -a

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get -f install
