Google Earth not working Mint 10

Postby Catchpole on Sun Dec 09, 2012 8:41 am

I downloaded Google Earth from the Package manager and also the deb installation package.
However when I try to run it I get the initial splash screen and then nothing.
When I run it from the Terminal I get the following report:

myname@Tower-Case ~/Desktop $ /usr/bin/googleearth
Google Earth has caught signal 11.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Google Earth has crashed.
This is a bug in the program, and should never happen under normal
circumstances. A bug report and debugging data have been written
to this text file:

What do I need to do to get it to run in Mint 10?

Hello Catchpole,

Mint 10 has been obsolete since April - so it's likely you will not find a fix for this.
see http://www.linuxmint.com/oldreleases.php

You would be better off if you could update to a newer version.

I think the problem is Google Earth 7 and not Mint 10.

Here is alink to a possible solution, although Google is apparently wirking on a permanent fix.

Hi kc1di,
I have been thinking about upgrading to Mint 13 LTS but I usually think that "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Now I'll have to decide if I need Google Earth enough to change to Mint 13!
I've got it on other machines.

If I do upgrade, I'll go for the clean install.
Is all personal data kept in one area in Linux operating systems? (I'll do a backup first)
Windows is particularly bad for having data scattered all over the hard drive.

Hi germex,
Thanks for the information.
I think I'll either wait for an official fix or upgrade to Mint 13 and try again. (Not decided at this point in time)

Catchpole.

You're right on this. But here it's more a question of security updates ! You won't receive any updates now. It's a big problem you know.
Linux Mint 10 was the best !
Currently using LMDE64 & Cinnamon. Working well ! Thanks !

Hi Again Catchpole,

I recommend mint 13 I use it on 4 machines here and don't regret the update at all. It's just a work horse for me.
I use mate edition on three of my work machine and Cinnamon on the 4th which is sort of my test bed.
In any event i agree with you doing a clean install.
one other good thing about mint 13 is it is long term support and will be support until 2017. so you'll get regular security updates.

Good Luck with what ever you decide.
I don't use Google Earth that much but do have it installed and it is work for me anyway in 13.

Hi kcd1di,

I think I'll upgrade when I get a spare hour.
What I want to know is:

Is all the personal data kept in one place i.e the Home folder?
What about the email files for Thunderbird and Bookmarks for Firefox etc?

Regards, Catchpole.

All that info is stored in your home folder. I would however export my Firefox and Thunderbird bookmarks and address books and copy them to a usb or cd or something just to be safe or upload them to a cloud storage like ubuntuone or dropbox. along with any other important documents or files.

Or I use the xmarks extension for backing up bookmarks that way am sync to whatever system I'm on with firefox. Clean install then Firefox install xmarks extension and retrieve my bookmarks ready to go. Never checked out or used firefox built in sync feature which in another to take a look at.

That way I don't have to go searching where's that bookmarks.html file and copy over to another folder kind of thing.

I always set up a separate /home partition just for the reason a clean install of / root won't touch my /home. And can always use mintbackup to back things up to external device like usb drive then restore.
