Need help installing Startupmanager in LM14.1 Cinnamon

Postby rewyllys on Sun Dec 09, 2012 4:51 pm

From Launchpad.net, I've downloaded the startupmanager_1.9.13.orig.tar.gz file into my new installation of LM 14.1 Cinnamon.

I've extracted its files to /home/ron/Startupmanager/startupmanager-1.9.13. I've followed the instructions on Launchpad.net. These tell me simply to issue the command "python setup.py install" in the foregoing folder.

Here is the response to the foregoing command:

Code: Select all
ron@ron-desktop-lm14 ~/Startupmanager/startupmanager-1.9.13 $ python setup.py install

ron@ron-desktop-lm14 ~/Startupmanager/startupmanager-1.9.13 $

Issuing the command "sudo python setup.py install" yields the same response (after asking for my password and receiving it).

If someone can tell me what I've done wrong and/or what I should do, I'll be very grateful.

An alternative, and I think simpler, way of asking for help in this matter is for me to ask for the following help:

What repository(ies) do I need to add--to the initial set of repositories for the Synaptic Package Manager in LM14.1 with Cinnamon--in order to have SPM acquire and install startupmanager?

Again, thanks in advance for any and all help.

Mank, many thanks for the information about the death of Startup Manager and especially for introducing me to Grub Customizer, which has solved my problem completely. :D

However, I did encounter some quirks in installing Grub Customizer into LM14.1 Cinnamon, so for the benefit of other potential users, here are the steps by which I succeeded in installing it.

Step 1: At the command line, issue the following two instructions, in sequence:

Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:danielrichter2007/grub-customizer
sudo apt-get update

The 3rd recommended command-line instruction

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install grub-customizer

did not work for me.

Instead, I wound up using the following second step.

Step 2: Open the Synaptic Package Manager, mark grub-customizer for installation, and click on the Apply option.
Step 3: Log out and then log in again.

After Step 3, you should be able to find "Grub-Customizer" under Menu --> Preferences.
