Could someone tell me where i have gone wrong please
Everywhere :)
But it is not not a stupid mistake :)
To use the apt-get way to install the application must be found in the repositories
If you download a file that's not the case (well - it could be in the repos even if you downloaded it)
If the file is a .deb you just double click it or possibly Firefox gives you the option to install
When it's not you have to do a bit more, probably compile
Start by installing build essentials
http://www.linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopi ... =90&t=9234
Then read the read me file for the package and do as advised For better understanding read
http://www.linuxmint.com/wiki/index.php ... eb_package
This is not the normal way to install - almost everything is found in the repos and/or the Software portal
And this is also the case for Real player (even if it's not called RealPlayer11GOLD.bin there)
The simplest way is to use the software portal to install it, but it can also be installed with Synaptic/apt-get and then its called realplayer
It's the latest ver 10 that's in the repos - I don't know if it's worth the hassle with this .bin but it's up to you

Colin,

Open a program called synaptic. Enable all the repositories that are available there. That function is in a drop down menu. I believe it is called, "managing repositories."

Exit that program, open a terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install realplayer

Close the terminal. You are done. :-)
