Text replacement software

Postby Speedbump on Wed Jan 02, 2013 3:15 pm

I have Linux Mint 14.1 Cinnamon up and running. (My second attempt at becoming a Linux user.) I love it so far. I have practically everything behaving like I want except for the lack of a text replacement program similar to Texter. I have used Texter in Windows for several years and find it very hard to get along without. Just a couple typed letters can insert a book if one so desires. I found it very handy for inserting links to different pages on my Website for potential customers among many other things.

I have looked high and low with no luck; does anyone have any suggestions for a similar program?

Thanks in advance.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

The only similar programs I can find for you is Snippits (old page detailing snippits) or Autokey (install via software manager autokey-gtk). Also you can try Texter using Wine (you can install wine from software manager or install the lastest version from here

Thanks,

I tried Snippits, but it doesn't seem to be available for Mint. I couldn't find it in the Software Manager. I will try the others though. I think I tried Autokey in Windows way back when, but can't remember how it works. It might be just what I need. Thanks a lot.

OK, I found Autokey, installed it ( a bunch of times thinking something went wrong). Maybe I'm just blind, but I can not get it to work. I give it the text I want replaced, I give it a key and an abbreviation. A few times in Notepad it would type the text for me, but if I held the buttons down too long, it would keep repeating it. Next try... nothing' it wouldn't type the text. Now I'm getting error messages that Autokey is running but not responding. I have to uninstall it to make that go away.

Is there something I'm just overlooking that is causing my problems, or is Autokey having a problem with Mint 14.1?

I'm no expert at this but I assuming using it with notepad (which runs under wine) may be one of your problems. Have tried it with Cinnamon's default text editor (nano or gedit)?

I meant gedit, and I have finally gotten it to work somewhat. I think it has potential (autokey) but it is the most finickey program I have ever used. The right click menu does absolutely nothing. It won't even delete anything. I made a few typos and now can't get them to go away. I fix them and they go right back to what they were before. It's terribly annoying trying to work with an application that wants to fight you all the way.

What's amazing is the little amount there is about it on the Internet. A few how to pages that are sketchie to say the least.

Thanks for the help, I'm a lot further ahead then I was three days ago.
