Hi!
This is my first post on this forum. I installed Mint 14 on my laptop along with Win XP. This laptop was frequently shutting down due to overheating (10 min max for a session; thanks to Win XP). So far, no overheating, no shutdowns..
Great !
Few issues surfaced during this dual-booting setup.
1. I re-sized windows partition; and now I cannot boot into Win XP (selecting this option simply returns to boot-loader) ==> not a big deal, if I can access the data/photos through Mint
2. I like to access/import all my photos into linux; and organize in linux. I have few thousands of photos spread across 3 user directories. Is there any tool that can help me ~find~ and ~organize~ photos in Mint? I tried gthumb. haven't figured out yet, if it can pool all my photos

Well with gthumb it should be pretty easy, File>Import From>Folder. Of course that assumes your MInt installation successfully mounts your Windows partition so it can see the folders it has to import. There are other options though, but gthumb is the place to start.

Are you talking about actually moving them all together into one organized folder?
Or just tagging and importing into a program?

As importing images usually does not move or copy them to a new location unless the program gives you that option on import. It just read where they are and generate a database of where and allow you to add keywords and tags giving them more descriptions to the image and creates it's use only database.

How you want to organize images determines type of program you need. As one is physically moving images into a organized folder structure. The other is just making it easier for the program itself to find and store the images location.

My recommend is to actually import or move manually images into a cohesive structure for easier finding by program or user.
Like Pictures>Year>Folder>Day structure that I maintain and then also regularly backup to external. Also after they are imported from that kind of folder setup. I add Keywords/Tags to them for making it easier to find them in my editing program.

As having images all over the place is only going to get worse to use and maintain in the future.

Started doing Photography part time over 5 years ago. and started with a few hundred but now over 34,000 images that take up over 344Gb of space. If I had to keep up with multiple locations or drives for those. It would be difficult and time consuming to keep track of. Now just one location Images to backup. And in Images is my folder tree structure that whatever programs I am using Windows or Linux I always setup programs to always import images to that location in the same way Images>Year>Month>Day.

That is a good point Orbmiser and one I should have thought of because that is the very reason I use gthumb. I hate it when photo organisers physically move images from where I have put them (and a lot of them do) it drives me mad, but otoh if I take more than 20 photos a year I would be very surprised so my folders are not that difficult to manage.

I will try to search/move using gThumb. Hope I can collect all the photos from multiple user directories this way.

I tried to search for all the photos in my 50 GB HDD user directory using gT. It was pretty quick and easy to sort/move photos.
