Linux Mint Problems & Questions

Hello,

I have recently installed Linux Mint Nadia on another drive and have been messing around with it for a couple days, or at least trying to. So far I have really loved the experiance. It is very beautiful and easy to customize to my preferences, and the software and features of it already avalible certainly helps with what I do on PC time (writing, music playing, GIMPing, screen recording*which is ultra awesome*), but I have not gotten very far because I have a few problems and questions. The problems keep me from installing almost anything. Here are some of them;

1)
A lot of my installs (games, apps etc etc) either fail because of permissions, or because of architectect or missing file problems. I can't update as well. I have tried the solutions in the stickied threads and have just attempted this solution, but the later freezes and shuts off halfway through. If I attempt to update normally, I get the "failed to fetch" problem. Here is what it says no matter the solution I attempt;
Failed to fetch http://mirrors.dotsrc.org/removed/ubuntu ... ce/Sources 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://mirrors.dotsrc.org/removed/ubuntu ... 6/Packages 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/alecive/antigo ... ce/Sources 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/alecive/antigo ... 6/Packages 404 Not Found

Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
Should I just wait until the server is back up to update?

2)

My DVD drive no longer recongizes. I can't play CDs, movies, install games or anything. When I log out and into Ubuntu 12.04 or Windows, it works perfectly fine.

3)

I have a few things I want to install and test out in Mint, but I get a lot of various errors. The most common is permission errors, others include "architectect" errors and "missing files" errors. For example, one game I'm trying to install for my kid siblibgs is called 'KQ' and no matter the files I try to install here, I am always given errors like "Error: Wrong architectect 'amd64" or "Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: liballegro4.2 (>= 2:4.2.2)'" or permission problems. Stuff in blue changes depending on what I'm trying to install. *please see note viewers

4)

My resolution is WAY too big and I cannot see the bottom portion of the resolution screen to "accept" the proper change. Is there a terminal command I can run to fix this? I can't do anything with the current resolution. :?
Forget it. I had to restart PC, install x11-xserver-utils package (three times, first two failed), restart and then typed; xrandr -s 1440x900 to change my output. I think my install of Mint might be broken...

How can I fix these problems?

Thank you! :)

*I am not having problems with KQ, that was just an example of the errors. If others are trying to get KQ to install, you will need this .DEB file. Do not APT-INSTALL, it doesn't work. Download 64 or 32, install it, and then get the files from here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+package/kq-data and https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+package/kq depending on your system time (OS bit type etc etc). Once you have the .deb file installed, install KQ.

ubuntu/mint-removed nor ubuntu/dists/quantal exist.Which why you can not connect to them.

You can see for yourself here.
http://mirrors.dotsrc.org/removed/ubuntu/dists/
http://ppa.launchpad.net/alecive/antigone/ubuntu/dists/

I would suggest removing those non-existent links from your Software Sources (Software Manager>Edit> Software Sources>Other Software tab uncheck those links).

Wrong architecture errors usually means you trying to install 64 bit files on a 32 bit system. Do you have 64bit system and did you install the 64 bit version of Nadia?
Tumbar wrote: Also, is there a way to upgrade to Maya through Nadia?

Thank you! :)
That's not exactly an upgrade but downgrade since Maya is LM13 (Ubuntu Precise) and Nadia is LM14 (Ubuntu Qunatal). But it can be done but it's easier to install LM 13 over 14 and let it erase your Nadia installation then to fiddle with broken packages and dependencies and hoping your system doesn't break.

Hello and thanks for the reply,

Hmm, removing those links never stay removed for me. As soon as I turn the window off and reopen, they are back. I'll try it again after a system reboot (after resolution change, desktop icons and whatnot are missing) and edit this part.

And yes, I made sure to download 32bit downloads for each file. That's why I found this odd. I knew I was installing the correct bit versions, yet I was given all these strange architecture errors despite it.

I see. I was told just after I installed Nadia that Maya was the newest and would be supported longer by some friends. Then I will stay with this one, and not risk anything. :lol:

Maya is LTS (Long Term Support), supported until 2017. Nadia is only supported until 2014. if you're looking stability then installing Maya would be wise.

I think that rid me of the failed to fetch errors. I cannot find any yet. :D

And yes, it does mean something to me. I will go to Maya, but first I need to find a way to backup my apps/games/etc etc, because it was quiet tiresome getting what I installed to actually install and work. :?

Hello again and sorry for another error-post,

I logged in Linux Mint today and found that I am greeted with boot errors asking me to manually recover or press "s-" to skip. It lets me boot into Mint after the warning, which is too long for me to get the entire error name, and seems to act find inside Mint. I made sure that no HDD, external or internal, was installed just in case and it still gives me the error.

Not only this, but after after the previous problem was finally cured last night and I installed drivers for my LE card, they seem to not allow OpenGL anymore. So I looked it up and have attempted to install the directed packages, but all of them requires another that refuses to install, e.i 1 sends me to 2, 2 sends me back to 1. It was working before the shut down and I never installed any of these before, too. But I checked and the Nvidia still says it is installed and the driver is update to; http://postimage.org/image/xwos8eaqb/

Also, if it matters, some of the things I downloaded yesterday night have disappeared as well--as if the system went back a day or two. I do not know what could possible go wrong. I installed the drivers from nvidia's official site here and it was working, but nearly all I did last night seems to have vanished?

System info;
Kernel: Linux 3.5.0-17-generic (i686)
Processor: 2x AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 240 Processor
Memory: 3103MB (1527MB used)
Operating System: Linux Mint 14 Nadia
Resolution: 1440x900 pixels
OpenGL Renderer: GeForce 6600 LE/PCIe/SSE2/3DNOW!
X11 Vendor: The X.Org Foundation

EDIT:

The Software Manager hangs 90% of the time, and won't let me load into some of the packages at all. Just freezes.

This is bit out of my experience so I'm unsure how help with this problem but what do mean you some programs are missing? Missing from your menu? Have tried press alt F2 then type in the program name?

Also the Software manager in Mint always develops program sooner or later. Yon try to install Ubuntu Software Center or Deepin Software Center or just use snypatic manager to install programs.

Missing from the menu or even the computer if Software Manager says it installed, and missing from the Software Manager list now but wasn't before the time revert. I will try the F12 next.

I have tried Synaptic Package Manager, but I have the same issues with it as I do with the Software Manager Center. When I select some packages and it attempts to load the description (for SMC) it freezes and when I try in Synaptic, it doesn't let me mark or when it does, it marks everything as broken (which cannot be fixed).

I will try the other packages you have suggested right now. :)

*Also, it seems those pesky boot problems have gotten worse.

EDIT:

Nope, none of that worked. They freeze too. :( I think I might have to do a fresh install...may I ask if mintbackup's backups work in Maya, the stable version? Because if they do, then I will just go with Maya instead. :)

I never used mintBackup so I don't know.

Hello

Alright then, I have another free HDD. I'll just install Maya and attempt to load the files and hope it works. For now though, is there something I can do about the boot up errors I get about manual recovering or skipping?

Thanks.

Rereading your previous posts I guessing this may be the solution to your problem.

http://jcyberinux.com/rjdreyes/how-to-f ... buntu.html

I'm not certain which Nadia edition you're running Cinnamon,MATE,KDE,XFCE so you will have replace the sudo gedit with sudo and whatever the default text editor is (on Mate it's pluma, on KDE it's kate, on XFCE it's mousepad).

Hello,

Sorry I never mentioned it before. I am running Nadia Cinnamon. How can I tell which Cinnamon has?

I believe cinnamon uses gedit since it's Gnome 3. In the menu under accessories look for gedit

Hello,

Yes, I have gedit, but the lines the link shows is different than what I actually have;
# / was on /dev/sdb1 during installation
UUID=46748eac-8b8a-42d4-b683-be69adda1833 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
# swap was on /dev/sda5 during installation
UUID=e9706eb1-2989-4fd7-b50b-0aaea79ab903 none swap sw 0 0
# swap was on /dev/sda6 during installation
UUID=d8df66db-b512-4f72-ac9f-360835231ad6 none swap sw 0 0
And I'm not sure which to delete.

When booting up the screen should tell you what caused an error (sdb1,sda2,etc and uuid=) when displaying press S to Skip Mount message. Make a note of it and repeat the steps and delete the line that caused the error.

Hello,

Ah, I can't see all of it as the line runs off the screen in both directions (left and right), but I will try to see if I can get the full line and report back if it helped. (:

Hello,

That removed the errors at boot up concerning skipping or manually recovering, but I had to remove two lines instead. But, before I went to remove the two lines at boot up I got a massive error;

Code: Select all

It took me to the CLI where I did a sudo apt-get update (installed 9 updates, but not one) and then restarted the computer and it went on fine.

I'm guessing because it is mentioned a lot, NVIDIA is the problem...?

EDIT:

I got the same thing again, asking me to configure the X server and interface before restarting mdm, not even recovery works. So I turned the computer off, removed the GPU and now it boots in fine using the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430, which is supported by the same driver. So I guess it really IS a GPU problem with the LE card, right?

Is there a way to fix the configuring issue so I may put my card back in through the CLI?
