Program disappears when minimized

Hi: My system is Linux Mint 14 Nadia 32-bit. Whenever I have any program (such as Firefox or a file browser) open on the desktop and press the minimize sign (-) on the upper right-hand corner, it closes. To bring the program up again, I have to restart it, and the previous program settings are gone. How can I fix this problem? Thanks. Aweck

Hi Aweck - welcome to the Linux Mint forums :)

I think you need to add the "Window List" applet to your panel.
Right-click the panel > click "Add applets to the panel" > check the box next to "Cinnamon window list".

I think the same sort of thing happens in KDE. If the 'task manager' widget is not installed, or whacked like I did once, minimizing an open app makes it disappear. I think the process is still running though. With that task manager properly installed minimizing reduces the open app to a tab in the taskbar.
