I am totally new to this way of installing software so for me this is a totally new experience for me to learn from.

I am trying to install the latest version of Avidemux into Linux Mint 14 xfce. So far, I have downloaded/extracted the tar file into my Videos folder. In there I have a folder called Avidemux 2.6.1 I tried following the instructions but am somewhat confused as to what and how I have to install Avidemux.

I did open a terminal and went to the /videos/Avidemux 2.6.1 folder. Now what?

Thanks for the help!!!

You have an archive for compiling and avidemux is not the best to start learning how to compile.

You need to be connected to the internet then find Synaptic package manager in your menu system. Enter your password when prompted.
Click on the refresh button at the top to refresh the package list then look down the list for avidemux, right click & select mark for installation. You will get a dialog showing all the other required packages - ok this. I think that this also includes the gui (avidemux is commandline) but look out for avidemux-gtk+ or avidemux-qt These are the two alternative gui's.

When you have done all that click on the apply button and wait for the installations to complete.

Thanks but I don't think that Avidemux 2.6.1 is in the repos. It's the older version which I can't use with the files I have. 2.6.1 fixes the problem I am having opening some formats.

Oh well, best of luck, you will need a load of dev packages probably. You could also try the nightly build deb packages, ubuntu but might work.
