syncing music to my iphone 5

I would like to transfer music from my laptop to my iPhone 5 (iOS 6.1). I'm using Linux Mint 14. I have tried the following methods, and none worked for me:

(1) Installed a Windows guest in VirtualBox with Itunes. Itunes would not recognize my device. Problem similar to what's reported here. Couldn't find a solution.
(2) Tried transferring music directly using Banshee within Linux Mint. Although Banshee seemed to report that the music was getting transferred, it didn't show up on my phone. Problem similar to what's reported here. Again, couldn't find a solution.

What other options are there, or does anyone know of a solution to the above two issues? Thanks.
