need to repair linux files

Postby Sanocon on Tue Feb 05, 2013 7:33 pm

So I dropped my laptop and it seems the impact messed up some of the files on the hard disk. From starting the os normaly the kernal seems ok but the actual linux scripts loading is slow and I cant access the file manager. So is there a way to restore the corrupted files so I still have my documents. Or do I need to reinstall the whole os intirely?

Way too little info on what files. And a question if actual damage to the hardrive itself.
Would just do a clean install myself. As too many unanswered questions as to what happened on the hardrive during impact.

Would do a bootable CD or usb first and check the hardrive for errors that may or may not be recoverable.

Also would wait for a more informed and experienced linux user to chime in. That may have more solutions that you may try to save existing setup.

Is there a way to run an application to check for file errors?

Someone else will have to chime in on how to do that.

Most likely a bootable usb or CD with right tools. Have no experience with them myself.

You can check file system integrity by booting into recovery mode and choosing fsck

How do I engage recovery mode?

fsck should scan your filesystem. It's Linux equivalent of chkdsk. Did it not check your file system? After it's finished it will either tell you of errors or if no errors found boot into the OS or ask you to restart.

I dont know. How long does the process take? And does it give any representation of it checking the files?

I just used it it took around 20 seconds to check my170GB linux partiton (/,/home/swap). It does not give any indication as where it is in the process only that is starts and when finishes. If you have huge hard drive it may take awhile. You can use a live cd using the terminal,it may be faster.

it will tell you to press enter to continue. If you have something broken it will ask to press enter or some other key to repair or press s to skip the repair and reboot.

Ok. Thanks. Now is it grub that will repair the files?
