Why is the software manager slow?

Postby android on Thu Feb 07, 2013 3:10 am

Every time I've used the software manager to check installed programs or find a program to install, transitions are very slow/delayed.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Try using a different server. I had the same experience with the Dutch servers..slow, sluggish and lot's of errors. Then i switched to another server (i believe a USA server) and now it's much faster. I'm thinking to switch to a German server since Germany is closer to Holland than America.

If you know what you're looking for, you could use synaptic instead. Much faster.
Home PC: Xubuntu 14.04 x64, Nvidia GTX650, i7 3770K, 16GB RAM, Asus Xonar DX
Work PC: Mint 13 x64 XFCE, Nvidia GT620, i5 3470, 8GB RAM
Laptop: System76 Kudu Pro, Xubuntu 14.04 x64

Both Software Manager and Synaptic uses the same source ===>>> the repository as written in the sources.list!
So when the topic starter encounters problems with Software Manager saying that searching for software takes a while, the same experience the topic starter would have with Synaptic. To check if it has any to do with the server he/she could try changing the server. It helped for me.

True, if the sources are the problem then swapping to synaptic may not help.
If, however, it's just that the software manager itself is slow (as it is for me), using synaptic or the terminal is a way to circumvent the issue.
Not as slow as the ubuntu software center though, in my experience.

I'm not talking about connection speeds - they're decent, but the loading time of the program and overall user experience needs a lot of improvement.

Synaptic is ok, but not a software center replacement.

Yeah; terminal is really good if you've been using linux for awhile, but coming from Windows, you're just used to that GUI user experience.
