Update manager fails Mint14 64

Here is the message:

E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/

E: The packagelists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Have had this for about two weeks. Anticipate it is an easy fix, but have not been able to hunt it up via searching, either here or round' the web.

sudo apt-get update

Try again after that.
