Linux Mint (Mate, 32-bit) - XP-ing Mint Mate ;)

Postby MintDude2013 on Mon Feb 18, 2013 8:00 pm

Hi Forum:

There are a couple of things I really like about Windows XP.

So, is it possible to...
a) Add Startup and Shutdown sounds? If yes, where/how can I do that? Can I use Windoze' sounds in "Media"? What I found in the Mint Forum was more slightly confusing than helpful for a Linux noob like me :).
b) Create something like a MS Windows 'Quick Launch' folder?

Also, can I ...
a) Change the icons of the Desktop folders (now all in green), i.e. how to select/where to find the 'custom icons'?
b) Open/use Internet Explorer favorites in Mint Mate? I copied several folders that contain IE favorites on the Mint Desktop and would like to be able to open these bookmarks by clicking/double clicking on them.
c) Make Mint Mate a bit more colorful, i.e. change the gray borders of the application windows to something more appealing, that is give it an Win XP-like look (with round corners, etc.)?! :) Is "Wine" perhaps an application to do that with?
d) Open MS Outlook 2003 mail in Mozilla Thunderbird? I think while trying to open one message I read something to the effect that Caja needs a program that handles 'OLE2 compound document storage'?!

Many thanks! :)

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I can help with some of your questions.

1. Startup and shutdown sounds - look at this link viewtopic.php?f=20&t=18754

2. Any customising of icons and backgrounds can be achieved by right clicking on the desktop and selecting change desktop backgound. You can change the themes or download new ones.

Hope this helps.
