--will also depend on the content/format of the files and possibly the number of embedded fonts (number of type fonts being used in the document), as well as images, as well as the size of the file (possibly matching the number of pages in it, but obviously not an exact match, since any page could be different from any other !)

Also I would say 1GB of RAM isn't a lot; enough for basic web work, email, messaging and some streaming with the built-in graphics engine, but would be fairly slow on larger applications, such as CAD (computer aided design) or video/sound editors for example.
