IPython not showing up in Synaptic

Postby pktl on Wed Apr 17, 2013 1:23 pm

Hello,

as stated in the subject line, I can't seem to locate ipython in Synaptic. It's been a while since I used Ubuntu, but I remember that it was included in one of the 'standard repositories'. On ipython.org installing via apt-get (or Synaptic, which does the same thing) is recommended... Is there a reason why it has been removed?
I'm running Mint 14 x64 Cinnamon, by the way.

Thanks in advance!

Running the same Linux Mint is you, it is available here and also is available in the Ubuntu package base.
Code: Select all
vincent@nadia ~ $ apt-cache policy ipython
ipython:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 0.13.1~rc3-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
     0.13.1~rc3-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal/universe amd64 Packages

So you need to have the universe repository enabled (which is by default the case on Linux Mint). Try searching again, perhaps in another program than Synaptic. Or if you have changed a lot of your repositories, perhaps share the output of following command to see if anything in there is messed up (test with above command "apt-cache policy ipython" first though, if it is available by Synaptic is just being unhelpful).
Code: Select all
inxi -r

You can always also directly check the Ubuntu repositories from the website: http://packages.ubuntu.com/

The output of inxi -r is
Code: Select all
Repos:     Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ nadia main upstream import
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal-security main restricted universe multiverse
           deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ quantal partner
           deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ quantal free non-free
           deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu quantal-getdeb apps
           deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu quantal-getdeb games
Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/steam.list
           deb http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/ precise steam
           deb-src http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/ precise steam

So ipython should be available. I tried reloading package information and for some reason these signatures are invalid:
Code: Select all
W: GPG error: http://archive.ubuntu.com quantal Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5 Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key <ftpmaster@ubuntu.com>
W: GPG error: http://repo.steampowered.com precise Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG F24AEA9FB05498B7 Valve Corporation <linux@steampowered.com>

The first one is probably responsible for my problem. How does that happen? And how can I fix it?

You can probably fix that by adding that signature (no clue why it would be removed, unless you miss-clicked in Software Sources for example).
Code: Select all
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 40976EAF437D05B5

Then try again:
Code: Select all
apt update

Thanks. I tried that but it didn't work. Which makes kind of sense, since the error says that the key is invalid, not missing.
Weird that the same key is apparently working on other peoples machines...

Then you may try the full steps as detailed here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/198371/a ... 375#198375

After an additional restart, this one worked. Thanks a lot :)
