Which distro shouls I use?

I have received a Sony Vaio PCV-RX463DS with a 40 gig HD and 128 meg memory. It won't run Ubunto or Mint. Wondering what would be the best distro. I would upgrade the memory, but like some Dell models, it is using RD ram. Very expensive and rare.

While I have not tried it, I was reading about SAM Linux recently. http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=sam I think you will be OK with an Xfce desktop since it is very similar to GNOME. You may wish to also search for light-weight distros. Good luck and have fun.

I hear Puppy Linux is really light weight.

I like Puppy and the Puplet Nearly Office Pup, with two caveats: Puppy's designed to be run off of the live CD, so although you can install it to your hard drive, it's a little tricky (nothing the right instructions won't get you through, though). Also, Puppy's networking isn't set up to remember wireless configurations very well, so if you use wireless, you may have to manually connect every time.

I've also been playing with TinyMe, a lightweight derivative of PCLOS. It's pretty and quite user friendly, though when I tinker with it in VirtualBox (e.g., try to set it to auto log-in), sometimes I bork it.
