Compiz + Emerald + nvidia 8xxx = slow?

Postby ScrotzaN on Sat Jun 21, 2008 6:52 am

Hi there!

I just installed the latest mint on a brand new computer with a 8600GT graphicscard in it and everything works great in compiz if I use metacity/gtk-window-decorator.

But when I switch to emerald animations become randomly choppy and minimize effect(zoom) is terribly choppy. If I switch back to GTK then everything runs smoothly again.

Is anybody else having this problem?

I googled a bit and it seems quite a few people have this problem.
In one thread someone had upgraded to the latest version of compiz-fusion and emerald and the problem seemed to have resolved itself.
Im at work so I cant try that now but Im going to later.

But is anybody familiar with this problem and if this is a solution?

Thanx in advance!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Compiz is still beta and who knows when it'll be anything else
So this kind of problems do occur and the solution is generally to use less of Compiz or not at all

Yeah, but it seems that its not affecting everybody.

So there should be a solution to the problem I think.

I have three computers right now at home.

An odl computer with an 6800GT card and then a laptop with 8600GTM and another stationary with an 8600GT card and the old 6800GT has better performance when using emerald but when using GTK window decorator the 8600GT cards are much better... its annoying to say the least.

Can people atleast confirm if they are having problems and with what card they are not having problems?

I bought the 8600GT card in belief that it would run everything flawlessly so...:)
Can be good to know when its time to shop again:)

I would not dare say that the 8600 has problems but I can say I've seen some reports to that effect - perhaps solved with never drivers - both nvidia and ATI release drivers frequently
