figured out an easy fix , for anyone else who might need ;
A - install Audacious 3.3.4 from Software Manager , set up prefs & configure
B - set interface to use Winamp Classic Interface , close/exit Audacious.
C - next , download Winamp Skins ( http://gnome-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=130
) and extract with Archive Manager.
D - make sure that the extracted folder containing the Winamp Skin is one word only with no line breaks or spaces , and manually move/drag this extracted skin folder into .themes in your home folder ( .themes it is a hidden folder , click view to see hidden folders in Home folder ).
E - now you need to use a terminal command to move this skin folder ( called 'Audacious-greytheme' for this example )to the root usr folder in the root file system which contains the root Audacious Skin folder , so enter this command (copy & paste ) into the Terminal ; sudo mv ~/.themes/Audacious-greytheme /usr/share/audacious/Skins
> then hit enter , when prompted by Terminal enter your password and hit enter again. it should now be moved into the root Audacious Skin folder , and once you re-open Audacious , you will see the skin in your interface prefs among the default winamp skins
p.s. if anyone would like to use EQ presets in Audacious , i came across these winamp presets , they have been converted to work in Audacious on MINT , just put them in the audacious hidden folder ( in your home folder ) ; ~/.config/audacious/eq.preset
