gdevilspie not in $PATH

Postby AE2100A on Tue Dec 03, 2013 10:39 pm

Just upgraded to Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon. Trying to install gdevilspie. Great program for auto populating workspaces with various apps! However, my current problem is that I am getting this error message when attempting to click on the gdevilspie start button (which is currently in the state of "the devilspie daemon is not running"):

There was an error starting the devilspie daemon. Please check that it is installed somewhere included in the PATH and try again.

I believe that gdevilspie is loaded in /usr/bin. When I run #echo $PATH, I get:

/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/games

which appears to include /usr/bin.

So, I am stuck. Anyone got any tips on how to get gdevilspie into the PATH?

By the way, when I installed gdevilspie from "Software Manager", it wouldn't run. I had to manually load it by going to:

code.google.com/p/gdevilspie/downloads/detail?name=gdevilspie-0.5.tar.bz2&can=2&q=

but then I had to manually edit the /usr/bin/gdevilspie file with modifications from a patch here:

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

So, I found how to modify the $PATH environment variable:

export PATH=$PATH:newPath1:newPAth2

Since learning how to modify the $PATH didn't resolve the gdevilspie daemon issue, maybe the error about the $PATH from gdevilspie is not really the issue, or I don't really know the path gdevilspie. Even though I am reasonably sure about the path, maybe someone can offer an absolute way to confirm the path of gdevilspie.

p.s. To see the current path: echo $PATH

This site gives instructions on completely removing (uninstalling) gdevilspie:

So far, it appears that loading the app devilspie first (a non-gui app) then loading gdevilspie might be a valid work-around.
