[SOLVED]Freezing while playing Minecraft

Postby austin0209 on Sun Jan 05, 2014 1:18 pm

Hello,

I'm new to Linux and I've recently noticed that when I play Minecraft, after 30 minutes or so the system freezes! When it's frozen, I can't do anything and I just force a shut down by holding on the power button. I've tried waiting it out but nothing seems to be happening. I've tried changing my Java, updating drivers, limiting RAM usage, and I've searched this up on Google and haven't found anything. In game, I also see blocks at the edge of my screen that are partly transparent. Also, sometimes my screen flashes black only in game. I usually get around 30-40 fps when using Linux. This doesn't happen in Windows but when I play on Windows I usually get around 15-25 fps on a low render distance. When I used to use Ubuntu, the screen flashes and the transparent blocks didn't happen but the crashes still occured. This only happens in Minecraft but with any other application the OS runs just fine.

If you know any fix please reply! Thanks for your help!

P.S. If you need any extra info please just ask.

I am experiencing the exact same problem. Just.installed minecraft for my kid's birthday and getting complete freezes every 15 minutes or so. Playing on small.screen and lowest video setting help but do not eliminate the problem. My pc is intel celeron g540, 4gb ram, no video card. Cpu running smooth at about 50c. Would a discrete video card help?

I'm starting to think its cause of my graphics driver. I've researched about this problem and when people with AMD graphics cards have this problem they enable the fglrx graphics drivers and it fixes their problems. I've updated my drivers and it still crashes. Someone please help :(

Is Cs.S a Java game by any chance? I have read that having Sun's official Java can help. Also read that increasing memory available to Java can help. I am experimenting and will keep you posted if I find anything.

CS:S isn't a java game, it runs on the source engine.

I am still having this issue. I saw one post indicating this was a problem with Cinnamon

I do not have a graphics card and it is happening to me, so if it is the same issue I don't think it has to do with your driver. What is your CPU? Mine is Celeron G540. I am worried the game is just maxing out my CPU although it does not look overly stressed while playing.

I recently had to reinstall my system. Decided to try XUbuntu 12.04 LTS to see if a more lightweight desktop might help with the Minecraft issue. Knock on wood, my son and I have each played once and so far no crashes. UPDATE Still no crashes after approximately one week of regular play. In my case there seems to be an issue with Linux Mint Cinnamon because Minecraft runs great on XUbuntu.

I'm pretty sure it's a Linux Mint/Cinnamon problem cause I used Fedora for the past 2 weeks or so and the crashes didnt happen.

YES.

I had this issue, I installed a discrete graphic card and now I am playing well, without freeze.

The processor also helps, my PC has dual core 3.0 GHz.

Is there any other way for a fix besides installing a discrete graphics card? I don't think I really can install one.

Minecraft is still working great for me in Xubuntu 12.04 LTS after experiencing the freezing issue in Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon. I would be curious to try LM16 XFCE to see if the problem is Cinnamon desktop or LM16 kernel. Regardless, XUbuntu 12.04 is working great for me so I will stick with it.

Well, I switched to Zorin OS and it works perfectly! I really like it and its Ubuntu based so it supports alot of things.

Well, it turns out Zorin was also crashing while I was playing MC! However, I found a fix. I followed the instructions for Intel drivers here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valve#Intel_Graphics

Thank you all!

EDIT:
For some reason they removed the instructions on the page. I'll just type the instructions here:
Open terminal, and as root run these commands (type su or type sudo before each command)
Code: Select all
apt-add-repository ppa:glasen/intel-driver
apt-get update
apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-quantal xserver-xorg-lts-quantal libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-quantal
apt-get -y dist-upgrade
glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version" # verify you have mesia 9.1.6

Reboot and it should work.
Oh, and I forgot to mention this works only on LTS releases (notice how the package names have lts in them). If you want a fix for the more recent versions, I think there are some other packages for that but I don't know :P .

Weird, didn't you say you have an amd card? Anyway, Xubuntu 12.04 is.still.working for me. Just downloaded Mint Xfce to see if it is a Cinnamon problem or a Mint problem. Will report back.

Yes, sometimes xfce works better than cinnamon, because cinnamon uses GTK+3 libraries (new), and xfce uses solid and stable GTK+2 libraries...

No, I was saying that people with AMD cards said that updating it helped. I have Intel Sandy Bridge and I tried to update that to see if it worked.

Dangit! I upgraded from XUbuntu 12.04 LTS to 13.10 and now the freezing behavior is happening again. Anyone have any ideas what in the update would cause the behavior?

Oh, lucky you!
I also tried out Ubuntu 13.10, had the same problem but, I found a fix on the forums!
Heres the link:

Hope that helps!

P.S. I reccomend using Ubuntu Forums for Ubuntu stuff. :P

Thanks! I was just about to reinstall this weekend to revert back to 12.04. This seems to be working. Finger crossed.
