Skype & Mint 15 SOLVED

Postby bicky on Tue Jan 07, 2014 4:00 pm

I have just installed Mint 15 - no problem except I cannot get Skype to work.
I have downloaded both from the Skype website and through Synaptic. When I try to open Skype it asks if I Agree/Disagree with their terms - enter agree - screen goes blank. Nothing more happens. It is listed in my Applications/ internet menu but nothing happens.
Any ideas ?

remove the one you got from the website, and only install the one from repositories. then run it from the terminal and see if any error message is given to you.

Nope - No error message - nothing. Absolutely nothing happens no cursor movement. Screen stays the same.

I checked skype for any debugging option, but apparently that's not available. skype is closed-source, so unless somebody else has the same problem as you and got to fix it, I think you're out of luck finding a solution. contacting their support may help. meanwhile, if you can get your friends to use hangouts, that's a good alternative.

Solution found: Installed version 2.2.0.35-1

Starts up very fast. Works. Actually.
Functionality seems to be the same.

Got the download from Microsoft Skype website after a web search/forum search.
skype-ubuntu_2.2.0.35-1_i386.deb

uninstalled the 4.2 with apt-get remove skype, then clicked the .deb archive in file explorer- starts GUI installer which strongly recommends to use the distributed latest release.
