How to associate Transmission with magnets in Mint 16 Petra?

Postby Elt10W on Wed Jan 08, 2014 1:13 pm

I have recently installed Linux Mint 16 "Petra".

Previously with Linux Mint 13, when I clicked on a magnet link in the chromium browser, it would automatically start "Transmission". Now when I do so, it offers to open "xdg-open". The choices offered are "do nothing or "launch application".

If I select "launch application", it merely opens an new browser page. I cannot find anywhere in the Transmission preference settings to make it the default application for magnets... :(

INSTALLED versions:
Chromium Version 31.0.1650.63 Built on Ubuntu 13.10, running on LinuxMint 16 (31.0.1650.63-0ubuntu0.13.10.1~20131204.1)
Transmission: 2.82 (14160)

How do I get Chromium to associate magnets with Transmission?

respectfully,

I don't know a way to do that - but,if you open Transmission you can drag and drop the magnet link into it to start it

I don't use Chromium, but you will not find it in Transmission, that's for sure. Have a look at Chromium's preferences. There should be a setting there that will allow you to change the default application when you click magnet links.

If (only) you're using Firefox, you'll find that setting similar to this.

Transmission is /usr/bin/transmission-gtk

I really wish that someone who is actually using the chromium browser would 'chime in'. There is a a great difference between associating Firefox with external protocols and doing the same with the chrome browser. I am reasonably certain that I was able to do this with chrome and Transmission in Mint 13.

The main difference is that I am using MATE this time instead of Cinnamon. ... perhaps that's an important difference?

Thank you "stex89". It works, now Chrome invokes Transmission, as it should :D
