I have a question, it has been nagging at me for some time, why is there a package called Nvidia-Kernel-common and why if you try to uninstall it many other packages try to uninstall as well? I have an ATI video card and I am not sure why this package needs to be installed. Please help me understand this.

I am still getting familiar with Linux and do not fully understand the importance of all the packages. I like to strip my install down to what I need or what the system needs to run.

This must be a component of the oss nvidia driver - I have it too in my new desktop with ATI graphics (guess why ATI? To learn - but it just installed, on nforce, without the slightest problem )
The headers etc and finally kernel 2.6.24-16 is removed and replaced with -19 if you remove it - that triggers a kernel update.
This can happen as some files depend on some other files - in this case some kernel files depend on Nvidia-Kernel-common

Thanks Husse for explaining I did update my kernel to -19, I was having an issue with my PC freezing up with the -16 kernel. Once I did the update for the kernel no more freezing up. It also runs quicker as well. Funny that it runs better if I update things that I am not supposed to.
I know normally that is not the case but this time I got lucky. I never had the freezing up issue with Linux Mint 4.0. This did not start happening until Linux Mint 5, I believe it has to do with Ubuntu since I had the same issue with Hardy. I believe the issue may be with the kernel but being so new to Linux I could very well be wrong.

The category 4 or 5 does not mean that your computer will crash if they are applied - only that there is a apparent risk for it....
We have decided that stability is more important than bleeding edge...

Your right about stability being most important, what good would the OS be if it were not stable.
