Over all Mint 17 runs quite smooth, but what doesn't work:
Synaptic freezes often the whole system an restarting will be necessary.
the the bug-message is:
(synaptic:16174): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_child_watch_add_full: assertion 'pid > 0' failed
I have backported the synaptic to an older version and now it works. But the the bug-message is still there.

When did you last get updates through the update manager? I ask as yesterday I received an update that was, if I remember correctly, a bug fix for synaptic freezing.. I'm on cinnamon and not experienced the freezes, so, unsure if the bug fix is for your your particular issue, thought it worth mentioning though.

It's an update for "mintsystem" and you might need to reboot after taking it.
