Re: Dropbox, applet/ indicator not appearing

Post by uvlt »

I'm running linuxmint 17.1 (x64). Since the last dropbox update, I have the same problem with dropbox icon not appearing... (dropbox is running in the background).
I (think) i solved the problem adding a delay to dropbox applet (...5-10 secs) in the startup menu. :D

@scrognoid: Do you have libappindicator1?

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libappindicator1
I've heard it's necessary for Mate.

@crong
Yes, libappindicator1 is installed; but good to know. Thanks.
Today the dropbox icon is showing. Like others have said, it comes and goes.

After several days of not showing, my icon is there again today, but..............
For some reason which I can't fathom, the laptop took a bit longer to boot than normal, but only about a minute perhaps, so I wonder if the theory of a delayed startup applies?
I've had a look in some of the logs for a mention of Dropbox, but as I don't really know what I'm doing, where I should be looking, or even understand what I'm looking at - it was a pretty useless excersise. :(

I'm having the same issue - fresh install of Xcfce 17.1 RC on a Lenovo Thinkpad T420. Stop / start didn't work for me but at least I now know how to check the status via the command line :-)

To be clear, can we confirm the following:

1) This problem is only "applet/ indicator not appearing" - Dropbox is working, i.e. files sync OK, we just don't get the tray icon or the notifications that go with it.

2) No-one with Cinnamon 32-bit has this problem.

3) The start/stop solution I described only works on Cinnamon 64-bit.

Yes as far as I am concerned.

It doesn't work for me

You're definitely running Cinnamon and not MATE?

I'm definitely running Linux Mint 17 Mate -32 bit.

ETA: sorry - I can see how my previous post is confusing :oops:

Glad to see other people are having this problem too. I was ready to change everything over to Cinnamon, as the only reason I tried MATE this time was because of compiz...

I have 64bit 17.1 MATE and have the same problem. The only reason I want the icon, is so I can move where it saves the files. I have seen people making sym links, but that is not really what I want to do. I will try the stop/start when I get home, hopefully it works.

Same problem here. Linux Mint 17.1, Cinnamon, 64-bits. Fortunately, except for the indicator, all functions work.

To open folder I have to navigate to it. Stop / start the deamon apparently works (for now). The indicator is white with a black background, which I think I like it.

Linux Mint 17 Mate 64:
1) Dropbox working except for icon (Usually no icon. Today I have an icon but it does not open on left-click. Right-click>Open works.)
3) Stop/start did not help me

I found the thread below in a forum of a different distro and it worked for me:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=125122

In short, all I did was stop the dropbox daemon, regenerate the locales and restart the daemon:

Code: Select all

dropbox stop

sudo locale-gen

dropbox start
Hope it helps.

My short-term solution was to just use Dropbox version 2.10.51 until the icon is fixed. (I posted previously on this thread on installing the older version.)

I recently needed to make Dropbox delayed in startup for another reason. Someone above mentioned that that fixed it. Here is how to delay its startup.
1. Deselect "Start Dropbox on system startup" under Dropbox Preferences.
2. Make a startup item with the following command:

Code: Select all

bash -c 'sleep 10; exec dropbox start -i'
I labelled it 'Zzz Dropbox' to make it last on my startup list. The above code is set to sleep for 10 seconds before starting.

I hope this might be of help.

@ maberna - what flavour of Mint are you using and did locale-gen actually fix the problem of no tray icon at startup or just during a session?

I'm not convinced that any delay to the Dropbox start time is relevant, because I did a cold reboot of my laptop this morning, & it started as usual - but this time the icon is there.
I've not made any changes to anything.

I've modified the dropbox.desktop file but the problem persist. The dropbox icon appears or not randomly on each boot:

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Dropbox
GenericName=File Synchronizer
Comment=Sync your files across computers and to the web
Exec=/home/xfrank/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Icon=dropbox
Categories=Network;FileTransfer;
StartupNotify=true
X-MATE-Autostart-enabled=true
X-MATE-Autostart-Delay=6
X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true
X-GNOME-Autostart-Delay=6
I have LMDE Mate.
Active Distros in my computers: LM21.1 (Mate,Xfce); MXLinux (Xfce)
Locked
