to show Chinese text in Open Office - Word Processor page

All my emails are in English, except some that have a sprinkling of Chinese text in them. When I installed Xubuntu 8.04 on my Thinkpad T42 the Open Office Word Processor V2.4 showed both English and Chinese text without my doing any configuration at all.

I have now installed Linux Mint 5 Elyssa on another Thinkpad T42, but the Open Office Word Proc, also same version V2.4 that came as a package with Mint, shows Chinese text as tiny boxes. I have tried updating at the Open Office site many times, but to no avail.

Can anyone give me some guidance on this? I'm a newbie in Linux, and have been testing out Mint these few days and feel very impressed by its features. My thanks to the Linux gurus!

Which version of Mint?
As far as I know the difference between the Mint and the Ubuntu OO is the splash screen
I don't have Hardy available so I can't check but it may be another subversion of 2.4
Mint has 2.4.1
Other differences should not make a difference in this respect
In Hardy use synaptic to search for scim and then the same in Mint and see if something more is installed in Hardy
