using USB devices under VirtualBox winxp

Postby Caraibes on Tue Nov 25, 2008 5:11 pm

I am happily running Mint 5 x64.

I am aiming at having a virtual XP so I can use my scanner & webcam (while Skyping)...

In order to do so, I first installed VirtualBox OSE from the Mint repos. Then I found out this version didn't support usb, so I downloaded and installed the one from the Sun website. It works fine, but there's a problem (bug ?) when it comes to usb devices:

I installed Windows XP. The first time I used USB devices (scanner & webcam), both worked fine. Then, after reboot, they were "greyed out"... Not seen by Windows, but seen by VirtualBox, however "greyed out", so I couldn't enable/disable them...

There might be a trick I haven't seen... If any of the readers have a suggestion, please feel free.

I am also considering trying another way to have a "virtual windows"...

-Maybe VMware ?

-How's your experience with VMware on Mint x64 ?

Thanks in advance for your insights !

I have had similar issues, but it is actually easy enough to get usb working. In just 5 easy steps......

Have a look here:

I used this method (AMD) and I have had no issues since.
