I am reasonably new to Mint and Linux in general and up until now have had no problems that I haven't been able to resolve.
For some reason I am unable to extract any kind of compressed file via the GUI or using terminal. Also, the 'Extract here' option has gone from the GUI menu but file-roller is still installed. I have been able to extract files before so this is a new issue. The issue arose when trying to extract a Raspbian image for my pi. The progress bar gets about 1/3 of the way then just hangs. Terminal also hangs. I have tried other files with no luck.
Any help greatly appreciated

What commands have you tried? Were there output messages? For some reason I am unable to extract any kind of compressed file via the GUI or using terminal.
Is nemo-fileroller installed?the 'Extract here' option has gone from the GUI menu but file-roller is still installed
Re: Unable to extract files in GUI or terminal
Hi buzzsaw - thanks for your response.
I've tried...
unzip Downloads/2015-05-05-raspbian-wheezy.zip
This resulted in...
Archive: Downloads/2015-05-05-raspbian-wheezy.zip
inflating: 2015-05-05-raspbian-wheezy.img
...at which point it hangs.
Tried...
bzip2 -d Downloads/ubuntu-mate-15.04-desktop-armhf-raspberry-pi-2.img.bz2
...no output - just hangs
Yes, nemo-fileroller is installed

Re: Unable to extract files in GUI or terminal
Have you tried extracting any files that aren't related to Raspberry Pi?
Re: Unable to extract files in GUI or terminal
I've just successfully a non-Pi related file!! Any clue why this would be?
Also, I still don't understand why the 'Extract here' option has gone.

I suspected that the Raspberry Pi files were bad.I've just successfully a non-Pi related file!! Any clue why this would be?
I don't use Cinnamon or File Roller, but as far as I know, all that's required to have the File Roller options in Nemo is for the 'file-roller' package and the 'nemo-file-roller' package to be installed. You could try reinstalling both packages. Also, I still don't understand why the 'Extract here' option has gone.
Perhaps someone who actually uses File Roller can offer some insight.
