Cinnamin 17.1 64 Cannot open Synaptic or Software Souces

Post by jetercreek »

Mint 17.1 Cinnamon 64bit
2.4.8
Kernal 3.13.0-37-generic
AMD FX 8320
8 GiB Mem

Synaptic opens to show window outline for moment then closes. Software Sources takes PWD and does not open.

Code: Select all

synaptic
(synaptic:11600): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_hide: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
Segmentation fault
sudo synaptic
(synaptic:11623): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_hide: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
gksu /usr/bin/python /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintInstall/mintinstall.py
add_categories took 1.072 ms
build_matched_packages took 0.148 ms
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea 2.5.5) (7u79-2.5.5-0ubuntu0.14.04.2)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.79-b02, mixed mode)
apt-get install -f
$ 32%

Any attempt to install from terminal hangs at 32%. Even small apps

Apparently all happened after an update some days ago. No update notifications for couple of weeks.
I do not believe I am the only one with this problem. Smatterings of the issue are in the archives since May
and I see none solved. Been a user for many years, but weak on theory. If can check something else, please
advise.

Hi!
No solution.
Sometimes the Terminal output of

Code: Select all

dmesg
gives a hint to search on the net / forum.

The same thing was happening to me. The automatic update manager was also not launching lately, but it took me a while to notice that. I saw the same with Synaptic, after launching, it would load for a second and then crash again.

Open a terminal, and do apt-get update; then do apt-get upgrade (might need root privileges)
After doing that, both synaptic and the automatic updater came back online.
